Thankyou to all our school community who attended our Learning Progress BBQ last week. It was great to see student interacting with their families in our school. We hope to again hold a similar event in 2023 along with our Welcome BBQ at the beginning of the year.
2023 Planning
We are finalising our planning and staffing for 2023. It is most important if your family circumstances are changing in 2023 and your child is not going to be attending Port Dalrymple School that you notify the office ASAP or an Assistant Principal.

COVID Safe Behaviours
COVID-safe behaviours reminder
COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses (like the flu) are still circulating in Tasmania. The official COVID-19 risk level has been raised to ‘Moderate’.
Together, we need to keep practising our COVID-safe behaviours to manage the risk.
Simple things we can do:
- do not come to school if unwell – stay home and test
- stay at home while you have symptoms, regardless of the result of a rapid antigen test (RAT)
- cover coughs and sneezes and wash your hands with soap and water, or alcohol-based sanitiser
- try to stay a reasonable distance away from others when you can
- consider wearing a face mask if you wish to – they are readily available for use at the school.
All students should ensure they have access to a quantity of RATs. If you need RATs, please ask for them at the school office so they are in your home ready for use if symptoms develop.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
For any COVID-19 enquiries, please contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID-19 Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.

Although the school year is quickly coming to an end, our students are still very engaged in their learning and are working just as hard as ever to be the best learners they can be. Their reading data has shown magnificent growth over the year and they should feel very proud of themselves. Well done!
We have started our transition process to prepare our students for 2023: the Kinder students have already been visiting the Prep yard for play times and the classrooms in the afternoons and our Prep students have ventured out into the “big playground” for playtimes. We have begun our transition to space for the entire K-5 sector this week where students will have the opportunity to visit their potential classrooms for 2023.
Our Christmas Concert will be held in the PAC on Thursday 15th at 1:30pm. Our students have been working on their dances and are very excited to share them with everyone. Parents are invited to attend, however you must sign in at the office.
Early Years
Our parent sessions in Pre-Kinder have been very successful with the majority of our Pre-Kinder children enrolled in Port Dalrymple School for 2023. We have one more parent session our Christmas celebration in week 9.
Read & Play has been another massive success this year with 28 different families engaging in the program. We will have our very special Read & Play Christmas celebration this Friday, 9th December.
This year, the K-6 students have had a very exciting year participating in lots of fun things.
Some of the important responsibilities as Junior Leaders throughout the 2022 year have included:
- Hosting sector assemblies
- Leadership of playground activities in classes from Kinder to year 6.
- Writing newsletter reports
- We have junior leader meetings on Friday and talk about upcoming events
- Redesigning the 5/6 playground and doing fundraisers which include guess the lollies in the lolly jar.
In Term 2, the junior leaders participated in a fundraiser for wonder white bread bags. We advertised posters for students around the school to bring any bread bags to the school whether that was bagel bags, roll bags or just normal bread bags. We had to collect 25kg of bread bags to send in to Wonder White to earn points. With the points we earned, they went towards spending money to buy sporting equipment for our school playground which the junior leaders chose. We got to choose some really cool equipment. Thankyou to the help of everyone who brought in bread bags to help with this fundraiser.
In Term 3, we did a fundraiser which was guess the lolly in the lollies. We had two jars one was a bigger jar and one was a smaller jar. For both jars, it was $2 a guess and we ended up raising $280, the money raised will go towards improving the middle school playground.
In our junior leadership meetings, we talked about upcoming events and fundraisers. We are talking about redesigning the 5/6 yard and demolishing the flying fox.
As you all know the JLB have been helping out in breakfast club. Some of the JLB members arrive at breakfast club at 8 o’clock in the morning to prepare cereal for preps to year four. Thanks Jayne from all the JLB for being at breakfast club so early in the morning, making the milos, running all of breakfast club and helping with the JLB we wouldn’t be able to do it without you.
Throughout the year, the year 5/6 students have had the opportunity to participate in several sporting events and activities including.... 5/6 sport, Basketball at SGTPS, basketball in the school's basketball tournament and country gold. Congratulations to those students who were selected to represent both Port Dalrymple School and Tamar in the Country Gold Carnivals. The country gold carnivals throughout the year included Netball, football, soccer, hockey, and cricket.
Thanks to Mr Sanders and the PSL team for organising the 5/6 sport trainings
This term, we are focusing on helping the Salvation Army. We have a red bag in each classroom to donate non perishable food, this includes, gravy, canned vegetables, jelly, and other food that has a long expiry date and doesn’t go into the fridge or freezer. We are doing this so the Salvation Army can make up food baskets to go to families for a Christmas lunch and dinner who need it. The Salvos have also been coming in and talking to us about what they do and how they help people who need it. There is also a Christmas tree up in the office for our donations and gifts.
Thankyou Tahlia and Tahj 2022 Junior Leadership Board
The best part of starting Year 7 is making new friends and having a great time at Transition. Year 6 students from Port Dalrymple School and South George Town Primary School came together for a fun and exciting day.
Students participated in team building activities, The Amazing Race around the school, completed their learning passports and played pickle ball. After a bbq lunch students went to woodwork and made the school mascot, Porty the Penguin.
We are all looking forward to seeing you in 2023!
A fortnight ago students of the GFG foundation student programme enjoyed a half day excursion to Liberty, Bell Bay. Students arrived at Liberty where they were welcomed and met up with their mentors. This included, an acknowledgement of country and a quick word from the General Manager Richard Curtis. A safety induction was given, student and mentor groups formed, and everyone was kitted out with personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hats, glasses, gloves, ear plugs, masks, and high-vis vests.
Once on site, students made their way up the metal grate staircase and to a platform overlooking one of the furnace floors, just in time for a ‘tapping’. What could have been a scene out of an industrial sci-fi movie, was in fact, packed full of chemistry, physics, maths and engineering. With flames, sparks, and molten metal ore flowing like a volcanic river. It was an immersive experience - the sights, sounds and feeling of heat for the purpose of creating a key ingredient in steel, manganese silicate.
Students also got to look inside the furnace and at the electrodes converting electricity into heat. They met with engineers and staff in the ‘smart centre’ the brain of the process, and for a final experience, students got to select the next location of interest on the tour to check out either the:
- Engineering Labs with Mick Spicer
- Trades workshops with Lorien Gear, or
- Computing and technology hub with Paul Dennis
It was a fantastic excursion and students gained considerable insight into the diversity of work behind the scenes in all kinds of capacity. Students met and spoke with tradies, drivers, engineers and technology specialists. Some of whom even went to the same school as them some years ago.
Some of the highlights included watching a robotic welder in operation, the tapping event, hearing directly from the staff working at the steelworks and of course lunchtime.
Mr Conroy’s Physical Recreation class welcomed the Senior Student Leaders on their most recent excursion to Hollybank. The sun was shining and the wind was quiet as students braved the heights of the forest. Everyone had a go after a few nervous moments in the morning. The staff at Hollybank were very patient and expertly students through the range of ropes courses offered.
2022 has been an exciting year for staff and students in MacqLit. We have seen huge growth in students reading and confidence, which has promoted improvements in their writing and spelling as well. This week we had our annual celebration session to celebrate the successes and growth of each student. The students were given a bookmark made personally for them and a book to continue their reading journey.
This year has been a quiet but steady year for us in the Performing Arts space, with our main focus on experiencing and immersing students in live theatre, workshops and the opportunity to talk and work with industry professionals. Students at Port Dalrymple School worked closely with a range of local award winning professionals such as Happy Habits and IO Theatre Company. Students from Prep through to Year 6 were treated to Happy Habits wonderful show Mother Nature right here in our own PAC, with students and teachers making little ‘cameo appearances’ throughout. We travelled into Launceston and watched Newstead College’s performance of Freaky Friday, Launceston College’s fantastic rendition of the iconic musical Rent and most recently, Kim Roe’s Under The Sea Pantomime.
Our students have experienced contemporary performance techniques as well as studying the fundamental skills of the performing arts such as monologues, plays, character work, stagecraft and practical special effect and fantasy make up workshops.
A special mention to Port Dalrymple School alumni Niamh Nolland for earning her place in the prestigious NIDA Bachelor of Fine Arts in Technical Theatre and Stage Management.
Our 3/4 music classes have been working hard and showed their commitment and courage by singing for a large audience at our recent Sports Assembly.
There has been immense growth in the Music space with various class performances, solos, bands and duos which have impressed both students and staff alike.
We are so proud of all our students (past and present) and hope that they continue to thrive, grow, have fun and continue to be given amazing opportunities during 2023.
To finish of the year our Senior Drama class are dressing up in their best Elf and Christmas attire and entertaining the Junior Classes with some special Christmas performances.
